Nature education and promoting environmental stewardship is a vital part of GVA’s mission. GVA’s programs are designed to instill awareness and understanding of the natural world in children and adults through outdoor activities and exploration. GVA offers a variety of environmental education programs at various community locations or at our home, Welkinweir, a 197-acre arboretum and nature sanctuary with a variety of habitats to explore, including forest, meadows, ponds, streams and wetlands. All programs include hands-on nature study through examination of plant and animal artifacts, demonstrations and outdoor exploration. Some programs also include games and crafts.

Girl and Boy Scout GVA’s workshops for Scouts fulfill many of the necessary requirements for various Badges, Try-Its and Achievements relating to the natural environment. All programs are 1.5 to 2 hours in length and can be scheduled for individual scout troops on requested weekdays and occasional weekends. GVA may also offer scheduled special events for Scouts on certain days throughout the fall, winter and spring seasons.
GVA hosts year-round community events for children and adults alike in order to promote awareness of the natural world. Programs offered include weekday classes for students during school in-service days and weekend night hikes for families.
These classes help little ones and their parents or caregivers discover the wonders of nature together through nature walks, stories and take-home crafts. Weekly classes are offered in the fall and spring and are all independent of each other, so children may be signed up for one, two, or the whole series. Adults and non-participating siblings attend for free.
