Education outreach is a vital part of GVA’s mission. We teach children and adults about the value and diversity of the natural world to build the skills and knowledge needed to help develop a sense of respect and stewardship toward the Earth. To that end, GVA supports a variety of environmental education programs.

Our School Programs, which focus on the preservation of the quality and quantity of our water resources, best management practices for land resources, and the diversity of plants, animals, and their habitats found in our watershed communities, are offered at schools or at Welkinweir. GVA tailors educational offerings to fit a variety of individual needs for gifted students, scouts, pre-school, home school and special needs youths. In collaboration with Phoenixville Middle School, we run an environmental school club to help students learn about local environmental issues in their communities while developing social and problem-solving skills. Service-learning programs are offered at Welkinweir and in the community at large to build a sense of community, while participants practice charitable giving through the donation of time and effort.

At the adult level, GVA presents informative programs to build awareness on environmental issues including stream health, farm preservation, and land and wildlife management techniques that promote good earth stewardship. Our bird and botany walk programs focus on exploring the diversity of bird and plant life at Welkinweir. The guided Bird Walk program runs monthly, tracking and documenting the diversity of birds that visit Welkinweir to evaluate and promote local and regional wildlife habitat health. Seasonal Botany Walks cover topics such as the Ecological Impact of White Tailed Deer and Hunting Wild Mushrooms. A special fall time garden tour took members and friends to the Mt. Cuba Center for Native Piedmont Flora in Greenville Delaware.

GVA host’s whole family events including, Eddible Ornaments for Wildlife, Owl Prowls, bird migration counts, and Save-The-Stars astronomical event. Special evening lectures provided information on forcing bulbs to learning about the migration of the Monarch Butterfly from Milkweed to Mexico.
